Interactive Murals: How Wall and Wall is Bringing Art to the Next Level
Living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area, we are constantly surrounded by innovation, experimentation and the motivation to push the boundaries. At Wall and Wall, we see our wall murals as much more than art painted on a wall.
When we first found Bare Conductive technology in 2015, an idea sparked in our minds that murals can be so much more than just paint. While still in the early stages of its technology, Bare Conductive made it easier for artists and makers to bring their work to life through interactivity. Wall and Wall took off with interactive murals that have now been showcased around the US, including PlayMe at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and the Ellucian Live 2018 pop up space in San Diego. Using conductive paint, we created touch points that our guests or attendees would press to set off sound and light throughout the mural painting. This was an extraordinary breakthrough that has opened the possibilities for brands to showcase their work in a whole new way.
What is next for Wall and Wall and how can we take this to the next level? In 2017, Capital One’s innovation team asked us to create an exciting and interactive way to showcase their products through a mural at the world renowned SXSW music festival. Partnering with Mirror Show Management in New York, we were able to bring this cityscape mural to life through projection mapping. The results were a huge success and opened up the possibilities for more murals that generate audience participation and engagement.
While projection-mapped murals are exciting and impactful, their cost has been a limiting factor for clients. Because of this, Wall and Wall set out to standardize the installation process in an effort to provide more competitive pricing for our clients. This required hours of custom coding and very expensive equipment. However, in 2019, Bare Conductive released an Interactive Wall Kit which provided Wall and Wall with a budget-friendly tool for creating interactive murals.
Using step by step guides, our in-house projector, and our custom built wall we were able to create this quick projection-mapped mural in just 1 week. In our interview with Bare Conductive on this kit, we explained our experience with the kit and how this tool will impact the future of mural art.
As interactive murals become higher in demand, we are combining Bare Conductive technology with our streamlined designs to offer the next generation of custom mural painting to a wider audience.
